The article considers the decisions to be made by the UK government and the EEC regarding the channel tunnel project, and reviews several schemes already proposed. Reference is made to the EEC's transport infrastructure policy and possible part funding of a cross-channel link. Economic returns predicted for various types of crossing are presented. A description of British Rail's proposed one-track tunnel and train operations is presented in some detail. The most developed design for a bridge crossing, initially with dual two lane carriageways and railway track is considered. The article concludes with brief details of an alternative bridge design and two designs for crossing by immersed tube.
