After outlining the history of the Compagnie Nouvelle des Conteneurs (CNC) since it was founded in 1948, the authors turn to the development of container traffic. They explain how CNC activities fit in with railway operations and the special relations that exist with the SNCF and Intercontainer. In a second part, the article deals with the characteristics of container transport and shows that the CNC can offer customers a very diversified transport service tailored to the merchandise and the destination. The different types of container are reviewed, as well as the equipment and handling gear used in special container terminals.
