After noting that highway experience with subgrade stabilization is not always directly applicable to railways, the author discusses causes of unstable subgrades and covers methods of correction other than some type of membrane. After initial use of compressed fiber glass, SP turned to polymer geotextiles as they were developed. Characteristics of woven and nonwoven materials are described along with methods of selection, installation and procedures for ballasting over geotextiles.
