RAILROAD RESEARCH...WHERE ARE WE NOW? WHERE ARE WE GOING?
The future role of railroads should have top priority in a ranking of no more than a dozen major research needs to be achieved by planning and pooling resources of railroads, suppliers, universities and governments in an organized and coordinated effort. The author credits the Track/Train Dynamics program as being one such activity and says that Canada's approach through the Railway Advisory Committee of the Railway Association of Canada/Transportation Development Centre may be more effective at coordination than comparable efforts in the U.S. Some of CP's individual and cooperative activities in research are described involving rail wear, car trucks and fuel consumption. CP is relying increasingly on econometric forecasting with better utilization of its information systems. Financial, economic and sociological expertise must be applied to research, along with technological knowhow.
