THE SEARCH FOR A "BETTER" 100-TON COVERED HOPPER CAR
Following development of a performance specification for an improved 100-ton covered hopper car by the Track/Train Dynamics Research Program, it is expected that one or more prototypes will be available for test within two years. After weighing disadvantages of the current jumbo covered hoppers against its economic advantages over an 80-ton car, TTD has launched a program for improving the jumbo's stability. It is expected one or more prototypes will be available for test within two years. The proposed car must operate for 2 million miles at speeds up to 80 mph with minimum effect on track. Carbuilders can now undertake design.
