LIQUID PRESSURE DUE TO MOTIONS IN SHIP TANKS
This article describes a comprehensive theoretical and experimental study into the problems of pressures due to the sloshing of liquids in tanks with internal structures. The work was undertaken jointly by Bureau Veritas, Det norske Veritas and Lloyd's Register of Shipping and was coordinated by the Swedish Ship Research Foundation (SSF). Loads affecting the inner structural parts of tanks such as transverse bulkheads, transverse webs and horizontal stringers were studied. An example from model tests carried out and reported here shows how pressure on a deck transverse varies according to the level of tank fullness and how pressure forces on a bottom web are dependent on web spacing. A large number of similar parametric studies were carried out within the project and the work done showed that the problem could be overcome by a combination of model tests and theoretical calculations. Order from BSRA as No. 52,601.
