The article discusses five aspects of Italian ports, and cargo handling facilities. 1) Energy twists the intermodal tale; An examination of the impact of rising fuel costs on transport and cargo handling in Italy provides not only an assessment of Italy's experience to-date but an insight into the problems other countries are facing. 2) Peace--and a role for private enterprise--in Genoa?; This article highlights the views of the head of the labour union UNICA, Conselo Agosti, on past labour problems in the port of Genoa and on the question of future port investment in Italy. 3) Ro-ro sector now clearly defined; Two major Italian operators deeply involved with ro-ro operations put forward their views on the success and future of the system. 4) Containers--too much too late?; Two sectors of the Italian container industry appear to be moving in opposite directions. While major container producers are faced with strong competition from low cost manufacturing sources, reports from the R&R industry indicate it is set for a period of expansion. 5) Handling suppliers do well in an uncertain market: A healthy climate currently prevails in the cargo handling equipment supply industry. Manufacturers report both steady demand and new products.
