THE TARGET: GREATER SOPHISTICATION, RELIABILITY AND EASE OF OPERATION

The dilemma of increasing production of track maintenance machines while reducing their occupancy of track is posing many problems. The greater sophistication and reliability of track maintenance units now built must be coordinated with railroad planning and training to fully utilize their capacities. Among major problem areas are ballast and subgrade, tamping through turnouts, cross tie renewal, rail grinding and equipment for spot maintenance. Separate articles describe the laboratory research undertaken by one track component producer and the role of engineering fabrics in improving track structures.
