THE AACHEN TRANSFER SYSTEM: MODERN TRANSFER TECHNOLOGY IN INTERMODAL TRAFFIC
The basic module of the Aachen transfer system consists of a reloading facility movable in parallel to the container train and designed for operation under the overhead contact line system. The concept of the container reloading station is analysed for its system and performance properties. Three container terminals of different size are designed to satisfy requirement profiles related to practice. Starting out from the still relatively small amounts of cargo to be handled at present, it is shown that the Aachen transfer system enables solutions in intermodal traffic which offer a realistic alternative to the large gantry cranes so far exclusively in use at inland reloading terminals. In addition, the high flexibility of the system permits a gradual extension of the facility to a high-capacity reloading terminal in a future container transport system.
