The author analyses the types of damage caused by earth tremors in the past, such as the distortion of track due to subsidence and fissures, the destruction of bridges and tunnels resulting from landslips, and the shifting, settling or tilting of foundations caused by the liquefaction of soft or sandy soil. There is also a survey of the designs of replacement structures.
