AMERICA'S COVERED BRIDGES

Soon after the Revolutionary War, bridge construction became more important in the United States. Early builders developed by trail and error an economical, permanent, long-span covered timber bridge. Four types were developed from much experimentation and were patented and licensed by their originators: Burr, Town, Long and Howe. Covers construction methods and tools. Types of trusses. Bridges used for canals (aqueducts to carry water), railroads and highways.
