The report describes how an unconventional cable and suspender replacement restrengthened the 52-year-old U. S. Grant suspension bridge and put it back in service across the Ohio River between Portsmouth, Ohio, and South Shore, Ky. on the two-lane US route 23. The bridge is a 1400-ft-long concrete-decked structure with rocker towers, cable bents and stiffening trusses. End spans 350 ft long flank a 700-ft main span.
