STABILIZATION OF SAND FOR ROADBASES

TRAITEMENT DES SABLES POUR ASSISES DE CHAUSSEES

This article presents all the results of the research carried out by the "Laboraoires des Ponts et Chaussees" on the stabilization of sand for roadbases. First a classification of natural sands based on grading, cleanliness and petrography is presented. The stabilization of sand with hydraulic binders from the point of view of immediate stability (compactibility/trafficability) and long-term mechanical behaviour is examined. It was established that immediate stability is mainly governed by grading; it can therefore be improved by grading correction (ratio of fines, fine sand, granulated slag). As regards long-term mechanical behaviour, by using the tensile strength test it is possible to distinguish 4 levels of quality. These levels of quality can be influenced by grading, compaction, type and content of binder, moisture content. Lastly stabilization with bituminous binders is considered, for which it is also possible to define four quality levels by using the immersion/compression test (linked to the modulus of stiffness, and dynamic creep). Studies have been carried out showing for different types of sand the influence of bitumen hardness, compaction, grading, bitumen content and proportion of fines. It is therefore possible for a given type of sand to estimate the improvements necessary to reach a given level of performance. (TRRL)
