A NEW PLASTICITY CRITERION: APPLICATION TO SOIL MECHANICS

UN NOUVEAU CRITERE DE PLASTICITE: APPLICATION A LA MECANIQUE DES SOLS

Using only the hypothesis of the initial isotropy of the material, a new equation is proposed for calculating the surface of plastic flow. The study of the characteristics of this surface shows that this new plasticity criterion can well be applied to some materials, in particular soils: numerous experimental results can thus be explained while they are in contradiction with the Mohr-Coulomb criterion. The rigid perfectly plastic material to which this new criterion applies, is studied by adopting the flow law, so called the normality law. Problems of plane deformation have been examined, and study results led to the establishment of a relation between the main stresses of the plane of deformation, relation which also agrees with experimental results. Lastly the above study is applied to shallow fooundations. (TRRL)
