A NEW METHOD OF MEASURING THE COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION OF FOOTPATHS

NOUVELLE METHODE DE MESURE DES COEFFICIENTS DE FROTTEMENT SUR DES REVETEMENTS PIETONS

The skidding resistance of pavements intended for pedestrian traffic has up to now proved difficult to characterise by means of a single reproducible physical quantity. To remedy this deficiency, the ccebtp has developed an apparatus and a method of measurement. This "low-velocity friction apparatus" (afpv) and its method of operation are described. In developing the afpv the objectives were: an elongation of the skidding distance in comparison with existing apparatus; a reduction in operator errors due to manipulation of the equipment; recording of the tangential forces to achieve a more objective interpretation of the effects of various parameters; the possibility of calibrating the apparatus very precisely before each series of measurements; measurement of two different degrees of friction according to whether the measuring pad is in a flat or an inclined position - to simulate the different components of the movement of the foot of a pedestrian.
