WATERPROOFING OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BRIDGE DECKS. EXPERIMENTS WITH PREFABRICATED SHEETS

ETANCHEITE DES TABLIERS DE PONTS EN BETON PRECONTRAINT - EXPERIMENTATION DE FEUILLES PREFABRIQUEES

Experiments were carried out on a prestressed concrete structure with 8 waterproofing sheets. One sheet was made of pvc, the other 2 were made of bitumen to which polymer, fines and fibres had been added. The sheets comprised A reinforcing system, 4 were glued on concrete with hot bitumen and 4 by melting with a blow torch. In the days immediately after laying swelling occurred. The laying of bituminous sheets did not give rise to any problems except for two sections along which large swellings occurred resulting in the unglueing of the sheets and the heave of the bituminous mixtures. The tests showed that: (1) the laying of prefabricated sheets requires satisfactory support conditions and great care; (2) prolonged exposure to the sun gives rise to blistering; (3) glueing by melting with a blow torch gives better adhesion to concrete; (4) sheets containing a bituminous binder generally have good adhesion to bituminous mixtures.
