THE USE OF HIGH-OUTPUT EQUIPMENT FOR THE NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING OF PAVEMENTS IN SPAIN

UTILISATION DES APPAREILS A GRAND RENDEMENT POUR L'AUSCULTATION DES CHAUSSEES EN ESPAGNE

The road network in Spain, like most road networks in western countries, was widely extended over the last four years as the rapid economic growth required an increasingly high level of service. The use of modern non-destructive methods became a necessity. It is interesting to observe that the conventional techniques used in neighbouring countries can be nearly directly applied to this network. In this light, the "Geotecnia y Cimientos" company has carried out systematic observations on the road network jointly with the Ministry of Public Works of Spain. These observations made partly with the existing equipment and partly with equipment hired in other countries led to the acquisition of valuable experience for the directions to be given to maintenance operations. In conclusion the author proposes a comprehensive technical rational system of road network management from the collection of data to budgetary decisions. The cost of applying this system is examined by comparing it to the overall benefit derived by the community as a whole.
