Over the past five years several large scale commercial developments have been completed in Cwmbran town centre. During this period the gross leaseable area has increased by 50 per cent and an additional 1200 multi-storey car parking spaces have been provided. The paper examines the effect of this development on trips to the town centre. It also analyses the modal split and trip purposes for all visits. Apart from an increase in trips from inside the designated area it shows that trips with an external origin have also increased. This is believed to be attributable to the wider choice of shopping which is now offered in Cwmbran. The paper concludes that the new town, as well as serving its resident population, is increasing its status as a regional shopping centre.(a)
