OBSERVATIONS ON HIGH SPEED TESTS FOR MOTOR CAR TYRES

Test techniques for determining the strength of speed of tyres are a direct aid to driving safety. Both the public and the legislation authorities have shown interest in these tests. Only test methods are used in which the speed is increased in stages. Differences exist with these techniques only with respect to the stage length and sequence of stages in addition to the loading parameters. In the first part of this paper references are made to previous works on the subject. In the search for significant information on disturbance to tyres under test, the results of over 1000 high speed tests were considered. The fact is confirmed that the tyre damage commenced with typical critical rolling resistance characteristics. The second part investigated some of the parameters which are of significance in this stage. In this, test rigs were investigated with various revolving drums and varied test programmes. An experience report without claim on statistical completeness deals with the following parameters using examples: load, pressure, extent of overloading, suspension, duration of use, tangential loading from guiding forces and shock loading. Overloading extent and shock loading emerge as particularly important parameters. The necessity of testing used tyres in quality control is illustrated. (TRRL)
