PROGRAM EXCHANGE WITH NORWAY

An exchange of computer programs has been arranged between BSRA and its Norwegian counterpart, NSFI. The computer programs, PROCAL and SHIPMODEL, which have been developed by NSFI, are ship design programs and both cater for tankers, bulk carriers, general cargo, and container ships. PROCAL performs ship design calculations and economic evaluations for a single ship per run. SHIPMODEL can evaluate the economic merits of up to 150 alternative designs by means of parametric variation of the ship's main particulars, albeit in less detail than PROCAL. The program will be particularly suited to the work of investigating energy saving methods which can be adopted in ships and the various effects of these, e.g. the effect of reduced operating speeds on initial and long-term costs. BSRA will provide NSFI with two suites of programs, SFOLDS and ASSYM. The former is part of the BRITSHIPS system of computer programs and is used for hydrostatics, stability, longitudinal strength, tank calibration, launching and related calculations. Essentially, the ASSYM programs calculate the added mass and damping coefficients for the roll, heave and sway modes and for cross-coupled modes of motion for single or multibodied marine structures. The programs can be used in connection with non-symmetrical bodies, e.g. the assessment of the efficiency of devices for extracting wave energy from the sea. The programs also calculate the wave exciting forces and moments applied to the body by a progressive train of waves. The solution method adopted in the ASSYM programs is based on the "close fit" method developed by Frank, at the Naval Ship Research and Development Center, Washington, D.C. but extended to asymmetrical bodies. Contact BSRA or NSFI for the appropriate program information.
