SYSTEM SAVES ON YEAR-ROUND RAIL GRINDING
Southern Pacific has acquired a six-section Fairmont rail grinding unit which is now working full time at reprofiling worn curved rail so it need not be changed out prematurely. The power/propulsion unit, five grinders, and a crew car and water tank make up the consist. Unit, which works at 1 to 3 mph and can be deadheaded at up to 40 mph, is utilized two shifts daily and is winterized so it may operate year round.
