GRADE CROSSING RENEWAL: THE B & M EXPERIENCE
Boston and Maine has been systematic in its approach to grade-crossing upgrading following enactment of legislation which provided federal funding for this phase of highway maintenance in 1973, 1976 and 1978. The appraisal process for each project and clearance from government agencies is discussed. The railroad has special gangs which do this work, usually in 8 hours per track crossing with prefabricated components and dedicated equipment. The author sees need for government commitment at all levels to continued maintenance support, not only for grade crossings but also for highway overpasses.
