Cavitation tests and research for ship's propellers and rudders at IHI have been conducted with the existent cavitation tunnel that was constructed in 1960. But this cavitation tunnel has become, from the tunnel performance viewpoint, unable to cope with the various problems of cavitation for recent ships. Thereupon, the construction of a new cavitation tunnel capable of making highly precise and speedy tests possible was planned about three years ago, and was completed at the Research Institute (Yokohama) at the end of August, 1979. This paper presents an outline of the new IHI cavitation tunnel mainly concerning the following points: 1. The process of the construction; 2. The building of the cavitation laboratory; 3. The tunnel and other subsidiary equipment; 4. Automatic control and measurement system with a mini-computer; 5. Trial tests for the entire tunnel system and the results.
