METHODS FOR PREDICTION OF SHIP MANOEUVRABILITY AT THE DESIGN STAGE

This article gives a survey of existing methods for determination of ship manoeuvrability at the design stage: theoretical approach, based on potential theory; free-running models performing standard manoeuvring trials; the parametric identification technique; planar motion testing and the transient-testing technique. An accuracy-analysis of the last-mentioned technique is performed on the basis of PMM data. This part of the work was carried out in connection with the author's diploma work at The Norwegian Institute of Technology, Division of Applied Physics.
