INTERNALLY-SEALED CONCRETE HELPS PROTECT BRIDGE DECKS

One of the latest methods for protecting bridge decks from deteriorating by using internally sealed concrete is discussed and illustrated. Deck concrete is placed in two lifts, with special wax beads used as a part of the mix in the upper lift. After curing, electric heating blankets melt the wax beads to seal the pores in the concrete and protect the deck from chloride intrusion.
