Five vessels of the 7,000 tonne d.w. class, were ordered from Kawasaki in Japan, with a further order for three larger vessels to be delivered in 1980. The orders were placed by the Hong Kong-based China Merchants Steam Navigation Co.--C.M.S.N.--which looks after many newbuilding aspects for the People's Republic of China's shipping concerns. These ships are examples of a popular and well established design arrangement with bridge and accommodation forward, machinery aft, and a single fixed stern access ramp, positioned at an angle of 40 deg to the ship's centreline. The vessel is classed with Lloyd's Register of Shipping Maltese Cross 100A1, Roll-on/Roll-off Cargo Ship, Ice Class 3, Maltese Cross LMC, UMS and registered in Shanghai. The lower part of the main trailer deck is of double shell construction which, in addition to the obvious doubling of the watertight integrity and strength, provides ballast capacity and stability control. A ballast control room is sited near the stern rampway door. A 7-tonne bow thruster--manufactured by Kawasaki--is fitted to assist manoeuvring, docking, and turn-round operations. This good manoeuvrability together with a relatively shallow draught make "Hua Yuan Kou" particularly suitable for access to China's river ports. The large tide range found in these harbours also influenced the design of the Navire stern ramp, which is situated on the starboard quarter and provides access to the main deck; from here cargo can be moved to the upper deck by a MacGregor 50 tonne lift or down to the tank top level by another MacGregor lift of the same capacity. The ramp has a minimum lane width of 7.5 m and is 32.2 m long. Quay heights of plus 1.25 m to minus 4.37 m relative to the main deck can be worked.
