GEOLOGICAL EXPERIENCES DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE ARLBERG ROAD-TUNNEL
GEOLOGISCHE ERFAHRUNGEN BEIM BAU DES ARLBERG-STRASSENTUNNELS
The author reviews the geology of the Arlberg area: he describes the structure of the overburden and the predominating types of rocks and discusses the effects on the structure and strength of the rocks arising from the extensive tectonic disturbance of the area. The experiences gathered during the construction of the rail tunnel and the formulation of the engineering-geological prognosis are described. The conditions actually encountered in respect of the rocks, their structure and strength, the presence of ground water and the overburden pressure are described. The difficulties encountered and the enormous deformations are described and the limits and possibilities inherent in the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) demonstrated. Attention is drawn to the influence of the speed of advance and of the relation between the cross-section of the pilot tunnel to the full cross-section.
