Railway wagons require considerable expenditure for their construction and maintenance. In the USSR, for example, the cost of the whole of the freight rolling stock fleet equals 1/7 of the total cost of all railway operating facilities and the cost of maintenance of the stock equals 1/5 of all maintenance costs of the railways, 1/5 of the entire railway staff being involved in work relating to it. Choosing the correct design is therefore of paramount importance. This paper gives methods for determining the main parameters and construction schemes for railway wagons developed by scientists of the Moscow Institute of Railway Engineers and other Soviet Specialists.
