CHEAP ENERGY SUPPLIES TO MITIGATE THE CRISIS ON THE GERMAN FEDERAL RAILWAY

DIE SPARSAME UND KRISENSICHERE ENERGIEVERSORGUNG DER DEUTCHEN BUNDESBAHN

Waterway navigation and air and road transport rely entirely on petroleum products for fuel, whereas the railway uses large quantities of electrical energy. The following values are characteristic of the energy situation on the railways: 82 percent of transport services rely on electricity, the traction current being produced from primary energy sources marginally affected by the crisis (coal, hydraulic power, industrial gas). Road freight transport uses up 4 times as much primary energy as rail does. Rail primary energy consumption has been reduced from 9.8 million (in 1956) to 2.8 million equivalent tons of coal (1978).
