EXPERIENCE WITH THERMAL PROTECTION DEVICES ON HEAVILY USED D.C. SYSTEMS OPERATING IN THE OPEN
ERFAHRUNGEN MIT THERMISCHEN SCHUTZEINRICHTUNGEN BEI HOCHBELASTETEN GLEICHSTROMBAHNEN IN TAGEBAUEN
A new overhead line relay with detectors can ascertain the maximum allowable temperature within the section of the line to be protected. Creep tests on copper allow lines with a small percentage of silver show a higher thermal load capacity. Temperature, tractive effort and humidity have a marked effect on increasing the strength of an alloy overhead line. Analyses carried out during use of the lines which have thermal protection show the effectiveness of the relay. Proposals as to how such relays could be used on suburban and main line networks.
