The Asahikawa Railway Operating Division (JNR) has to cope with snow storms for six months of the year. Snow protection equipment covers more than 580 km of line and consists of 168 snow-plows and other devices for clearing snow, as well as a large work force. The article describes how the machines are used and the forests and barriers for protection against drifting.
