PROVISIONS FOR CROSSING PEDESTRIANS

VOORZIENINGEN VOOR OVERSTEKENDE VOETGANGERS

Waiting times of pedestrians are greatly dependent on traffic intensities and road width. Both can be modified. Traffic islands are suitable to reduce waiting times considerably. A useful criterion for designing control measures is a waiting time of 15 s for 95% of the pedestrians crossing the road. Based on this philosophy traffic islands in Amstelveen were constructed while the road was resurfaced. In some cases zebra crossings were removed. The article gives a description of a crossing with traffic lights operated by push buttons and programmed in such a way that optimal results are obtained for both road traffic and pedestrians.
