TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS BY RUNNING OFF THE ROAD: SAFETY FENCES ARE MOST COMMONLY USED IN ORDER TO PREVENT RUNNING OFF THE ROAD IN NORWAY

TRAFIKKULYKKER VED JTFORKJOERING: VEGREKKVERK MEST BENYTTET FOR AA HINDRE UTROFKJOERING I NORGE 711O (TRRL)

Traffic accidents caused by running off the road constitute a major accident problem. They account for 20 per cent of all personal injury accidents, and 25 per cent of all the fatal traffic accidents. On the main road network more than a third of all accidents are running off the road accidents. Several measures can be used for reducing the number of such accidents and their severity, and one of them is safety fences. New specifications give rules for use of different kinds of safety fences. In general fences shall only be used when the damage by hitting the fence is expected to be smaller than it would have been by running off the road. Because the main function of the fences is to reduce damage, and not to reduce the number of accidents, it is important to make a thorough evaluation before fences are put up.
