PROTECTING ISLANDS AROUND THE BRIDGE PIERS OF THE GREAT BELT BRIDGE - MODEL TESTS

BESKYTTELSEOEER OMKRING BROPILLER VED STOREBELTSBROEN -MODELFORSOEG

In conjunction with the design of the Great Belt Bridge, an investigation was carried out into the problem of ship collision with the sand islands protecting the piers. The Danish Geotechnical Institute participated by performing model tests to elucidate the forces acting on a ship which collides with one of these islands. Models of a tanker and container carrier were used. On the basis of the test results and using earth pressure theories, it was found possible to construct a mathematical expression for the likely forces as a function, inter alia, of the width of the ship and its draught below the top of the island. This expression was in satisfactory agreement with the results of model tests carried out by the Danish hydraulic institute, in which ship models were driven into the sand islands. The expression was used in constructing a computer program for calculation of the penetration of a ship into the island, or its deflection by the island. (TRRL)
