LEISURE TIME ACCIDENTS - CAUSE OF ACCIDENTS TO CHILDREN IN A GERMAN CITY OF 50000 INHABITANTS DURING THE YEARS 1971 - 1975
FREIZEITUNFAELLE-URSACHEN BEI KINDEUNFAELLEN IN EINER DEUTSCHEN STADT MIT 50000 EINWOHNERN IN DEN JAHREN 1971-1975
In Wolfenbuettel during 1971 to 1975 the municipal hospital and two medical emergency services registered 7887 accidents to or involving children. 70% of the accidents took place outside the school, 30% in schools, kindergarten or on the way to school. 40% of the accidents were treated in the surgical practices. In one fifth of the outpatients the diagnosis was "fracture". The proportion of fractures among inpatients amounted to two thirds. The number of boys (62%) exceeded the number of girls (38%). Concerning the origins of accidents the most frequent were those in the vicinity of the home (51,2%). Infants under the age of three represented the largest number with 71%. In second place were road accidents with 12,8% ahead of accidents in the playground or sporting accidents which each comprised 10,9% of the total. Then followed accidents in the home with 7,1%. Road traffic was the most dangerous for 4 to 6 year olds with 16%, and reducing in the higher age groups. Among all age groups the bicycle, and among younger children the tricycle, as well as injuries caused by spokes comprised the greatest danger, and were far more numerous than accidents in which children were hit by cars or were injured while travelling as passengers in cars. Finally it is noted that these remarks will result in concepts in accident prevention which will affect not only the child. Adults must learn to perceive and comprehend the child's learning process "life". In addition the child and its behavioural patterns at various ages must be considered in the construction of schools, kindergartens, playgrounds and sports facilities. (TRRL)
