LECA AS A MATERIAL FOR ROAD EMBANKMENTS, BASED ON THE EXAMPLE OF THE HINTERBERG MOTORWAY JUNCTION

The 7 M high embankments for this project were constructed on soft lake deposits 23 M in depth. The bridge was founded on 40 M long supporting piles. Since great variations in settlement were expected between the actual construction and the embankment, lightweight material was to be used for the backfilling of the abutment. Following a series of experiments leca expanded clay was selected. This had a density of 0.55 to 0.65 t/m3. Prior to being placed its shearing strength, bearing capacity and suitable compaction equipment were determined. Leca with a top layer of gravel makes a thoroughly suitable material for embankments. In this case a further drag plate was installed at the abutment. Precise descriptions of experiments, time-settlement curves and construction plans are given. (TRRL)
