The production of an ice-inhibiting wearing course, using approximately 5% by weight of "verglimit", appears to present no difficulties from the constructional point of view, if greater than normal care is given to the mixing of the materials and the peculiarities of the material are taken into account. In contrast with the usual rolled asphalt pavements, no increase in labour or material quantities are required for laying and compaction. In the formation of the working joints, however, attention must be given to the reduced adhesive properties of the mixture, and this leads to more work in the joint areas. The structure of the pavement surfaces and thus the wear properties of the wearing course are greatly affected by the maintenance of specific technological data. The influence of the deviations on the life span of the wearing course cannot yet be estimated because of the shortness of the period of observation - initial areas of damage would lead one to expect a shortening of life span, however. Ice inhibiting highway pavements may not replace winter maintenance, however, but they should reduce it. The result of observations available to date do not make it possible to pass judgement on these surfacings. However, it is established that the surfacing inhibits the formation of a closed ice or snow layer effectively at least at temperatures around zero, and also reduces the necessity for the spreading of deicing salt in the clearing of snowfalls. At critical points in the highway network the use of these surfacings would appear to be advisable in order to reduce accidents and hold ups resulting from skidding lorries. Whether, on the other hand, in summer time defects may be expected in the pavement, is not clear at this time. (TRRL)
