INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE TAKING OF DRUGS BEFORE ACCIDENTS

UNTERSUCHUNGEN UEBER MEDIKAMENTENEINNAHME VOR DEM UNFALL

The report deals with the question to what extent the taking of pharmaceutic products forms a significant factor in accidents. In order to collect data for dealing with this question, all patients concerned in the study were closely questioned concerning the taking of medicaments in addition to providing urine samples. The statements of the patients were verified by chemical analyses. Clearly positive results were observed in 6,8% of the samples, slightly positive reactions were found in 7,2% of the samples and corresponded to only minimal traces of drugs. Comparison of the anamneses with the results of the chemical analyses showed that only in three cases did the anamnesis correspond with the analysis, in a further two cases there was a possible correspondence. In the remaining 15 cases the patients recollections were incorrect or incomplete. The conclusion is drawn that for gathering data concerning a relationship between the consumption of medicaments and accidents the patients statements alone are insufficient. Recourse must be had to comprehensive analyses, for which the means are surely not available at the present time. (TRRL)
