EVALUATION OF THE FROST-DEICING SALT RESISTANCE OF CONCRETE- THE USE OF AUTOMATIC PHOTO INTERPRETATION EQUIPMENT FOR DETERMINING THE AIR VOID CONTENT OF CONCRETE

BEURTEILUNG DER FROST-TAUSALZBESTAENDIGKEIT VON BETON - EINSATZ VON AUTOMATISCHEN BILDAUSWERTUNGSANLAGEN ZUR ERMITTLUNG DES LUFTPORENGEHALTES VON BETON

Following an illustration of the problems of frost and deicing salt studies, various evaluation techniques for microscopic investigations are discussed. Three to five mm thick sections are taken from small drill cores of 46 mm diameter obtained from the required layer. By means of a 60-fold magnification with a stereo microscope along measurement lines 2 mm apart, the pore structure is measured. The high expenditure in time involved may be reduced by the use of automatic photo-analysers. Three different types of equipment are described. A comparison of the results with those obtained from manual techniques show, in part, a very good correlation. Void characteristics and void content are derived for voids with diameters lying between my and 4 mm. Advice for the treatment of voids is given. (TRRL)
