THE ESTIMATION OF WAITING TIMES FOR CARS QUEUEING OUTSIDE TOWN CENTRE MULTI-STOREY CAR PARKS

DAS SCHAETZEN DER WARTEZEITEN VON PERSONENKRAFTWAGEN VOR INNERSTAEDTISCHEN PARKHAEUSERN

At the entrances to typical selected public multi-storey car parks in the town centre of Hannover, the objective waiting periods for cars in a queue was measured and the drivers were questioned on their subjective estimate of the waiting period. The results showed that a relation existed between the estimated and the actual measured waiting periods. A high degree of statistical reliability exists. Significant variations may be reduced by ensuring a one minute spacing between interviews. Stochastic relations can also be convincingly established for the variables "estimated waiting period" and "number of waiting cars". On the other hand, relations cannot be established between the estimated waiting period and the number of cars. (TRRL)
