MOTOR VEHICLES DESTROY THE TOWNSCAPE OF CENTRAL NORRKOEPING

To create a feeder route, plans had been drawn up to widen the existing Kristinagatan to 30 M. This would however have meant cutting into the imposing symmetrical block enen along Soedra Promenaden. An architectural merit survey recommended that the blocks on either side of enen should be preserved and also, if possible, enen itself. The present plan envisages retention of the blocks and the creation of a pedestrian arcade in the corner building along Kristinagatan to permit widening to 30 M. In another part of Norrkoeping, Oestra Promenaden is a very noisy street. In a block not far from the river, there is only one modern building left after a fire necessitated demolition of other buildings. It is proposed that this building should be retained, its windows soundproofed and its side wall brightened up by the construction of oriel windows etc. Further along the street a two-storey garage would be constructed with an anti-noise screen along its top, with a row of trees behind the screen. The residential building would be at the back of the garage, with balconies and a communal garden on the side facing away from the street. (TRRL)
