A HELICOPTER AMBULANCE CREWED BY DOCTORS IN STOCKHOLM COUNTY
LAEKARBEMANNAD AMBULANSHELIKOPTER I STOCKHOLMS LAEN
After a three week experimental period in 1977 a helicopter ambulance crewed by doctors was operated by Stockholm County Council (1,5 million inhabitants and 6,500 km2) throughout the summer seasons of 1978 (6 weeks) and 1979 (16 weeks). During the total period of 22 weeks 320 missions were accomplished. While in 1978 the helicopter was used for both planned (14 per cent) and emergency (86 per cent) missions, in 1979 it carried acute cases exclusively (98 per cent). By using conventional ambulances in several cases for transport to hospital after the helicopter crew treated the patient at the scene of the accident or place of onset of illness, the helicopter could rapidly be released for new missions. The initial preparedness was thereby increased, and the helicopter could be summoned in greater measure to road, rail and boat accidents (in 1978 4 per cent of all missions, in 1979 16 per cent). In 20 per cent of missions in 1978 and 1979 the medical contribution was adjudged of vital significance for the patient's prognosis. Moreover, in most other transports the helicopter was a much faster and gentler alternative than boat and/or car. (TRRL)
