A study on the evaluation method for stripping ratio of heat reflective pavement by using laser scanning camera

Heat reflective pavement is applied heat reflective coating on the surface that can reflect infrared, and it has a function that prevents temperature increase on pavement surface. Recently, the construction areas of heat reflective pavement are increasing for creating a comfortable road in Tokyo. In addition, there has been a growing interest in heat reflective pavement as a preventive measure against heat for marathon runners. One the other hand, spoiled appearances of road surfaces and the deterioration of road surface temperature rise restraining function has become a problem due to stripped heat reflective coating caused by running vehicles. However, road managers are unable to determine the portions for repair efficiently because the method for objectively evaluating stripping ratio of heat reflective coating has not been established. Therefore, in order to propose the index to decide the portions for repair, the evaluation method for stripping ratio of heat reflective coating is investigated by the following three phases in this study. First, images are generated by binarizing road surface images taken by high performance laser scanning camera mounted on the surface characteristics survey vehicle, which is based on the set threshold. Second, the stripping ratio of heat reflective coating is calculated according to the ratio of the number of black and white pixels of the generated images. Third, the correlation between the calculated stripping ratio and the road surface temperature measured using thermography is analyzed. This Study revealed that the stripping ratio calculated by binarizing road surface images showed similar results from the visual inspections performed by the engineers. Moreover, it was demonstrated that there is a tendency for the road surface temperature rise restraining function decreases as the stripping ratio to increase at the inspected site.
