SOME OBSERVATIONS ON THE PERFORMANCE OF A COMPOSITE FILL EMBANKMENT

When certain configurations of suitable granular fill and suitable cohesive fill are placed without mixing in the same cross-section of a highway embankment the performance of the resulting composite fill is not always satisfactory. This paper reports an investigation into an embankment with a history of slope instability, and demonstrates the possible effects of the injudicious use of materials of widely different permeability.
