PERFORMANCE OF THE CLAY CORE OF A LARGE EMBANKMENT DAM DURING CONSTRUCTION

The paper describes the performance during construction of the clay core of a large embankment dam in south Europe. Placement quality control of the core is described and the characteristics of the core material are presented. Typical results from electrical earth pressure cells, electrical piezometers and inclinometers are presented and discussed briefly. Vertical settlement data are analyzed and compared with results from one-dimensional consolidation tests on the core material "as built". Constrained modulus values obtained from oedometer tests are compared with Young's modulus values determined during the consolidation of the core. (a) (TRRL)
