THE BEHAVIOUR OF CHESHIRE BASIN LODGEMENT TILL IN MOTORWAY CONSTRUCTION

The complex structure of the glacial till in the Cheshire Basin presents interesting engineering problems in the motorway industry at both design and construction stages. The variable fabric, macro-structure, fissures, laminations, sand pockets and lenses are the products of its geological history and formation during the advances and retreats of the ice sheets. The behaviour of the lodgement till as a granular material offers a unique challenge to civil engineers to assess its past stress history and to some extent its suitability as fill. The excavation, storage, placement and placement control in motorway construction is also discussed. (Author/TRRL)
