FENDER SYSTEM-LAID ON THE LINE
A novel fendering concept is currently being marketed by the Japanese manufacturer Bridgestone Tire Company Ltd. The original testing ground for this latest fender type was with large vessels such as tankers. However, it also promises to alleviate many of the problems associated with the mooring of other vessel types and to offer significant economies in the design of mooring systems both aboard the ship and on the quay. Designated the Cell Shock Absorber (CSA), the basis of its design is the insertion of an elastic rubber body within the actual mooring lines of the vessel in question. By achieving this, the ability of the cell-type structure of this body to smoothly absorb the berthing energy of a ship, can be brought into play at the critical point ie, the link between ship and quay.
