FOREST PRODUCTS HANDLING--GETTING TO GRIPS WITH A CHANGING MARKET

During 1979 the export value of sawn timber from Finland and Sweden averaged in the region of 84 pounds per cum mi while that for a high quality printing paper averaged approximately 307 pounds per tonne. As these values continue to rise, along with the size/weight of cargo units, then the need for handling procedures that are efficient while minimising damage becomes more crucial. Accordingly, manufacturers and operators are looking to develop equipment designs and handling systems that are a refinement of current techniques, as this review of equipment trends demonstrates.
