ULTIMATE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF STIFFENED RECTANGULAR PLATES
The present paper deals with ultimate behavior of compressed rectangular plates reinforced by longitudinal stiffeners. The equivalent flexural rigidity gamma sub e proposed here is the fundamental parameter to distinguish elastic buckling and ultimate behaviours in the case of unsymmetric stiffeners as well as symmetric ones. It is clarified that there are two characteristic values of gamma sub e, which categorize the ultimate behaviours of stiffened plates into three types. Simple approximation formulas are proposed for estimating the ultimate strength of stiffened plates.
