DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE OF HITACHI'S CARGO LOADING COMPUTER

Hitachi Zosen Information Systems Co. Ltd. and Hitachi Zosen undertook a joint research project which took advantage of the latest information processing, electronics and shipbuilding technology, and developed an interesting ship loading calculator, the Loadometer 300. The hardware for this machine consists of a high-performance microcomputer and advanced electronic equipment, while the software allows for easy operation and permits accurate calculations with the minimum required amount of input data. To obtain accurate calculation results in the case of conventional systems, it had been necessary to input a great deal of data which pertained specifically to each ship, and to apply such data to complicated formulae. Operating instructions, input/output data, and error messages are presented on a character display unit. The operation is followed according to the displayed messages and input is facilitated by feeding loading information into the equipment via the simple keyboard. The loading condition is displayed on the tank/hold layout and the weight in each compartment is presented numerically for immediate confirmation of load-weight distribution. In addition, stress distribution is displayed graphically in percentages of permissible values to allow for loading adjustments. The compact printer can record input data and subsequent calculation results if necessary.
